Joe Tomkinson
I spent most of my life not knowing I had ADHD. I knew something was different — the intensity, the crashes, the feeling of being out of step with how everyone else seemed to manage. But I didn't have the language for it, and neither did anyone around me.
When I was finally diagnosed as an adult, a lot of things made sense. But diagnosis alone didn't change anything. What changed was learning how to work with my brain instead of against it — understanding my patterns, identifying my strengths, and building a daily life that respected how I'm wired.
That process is what MakeRoomFor is built on. Not theory. Not someone else's framework handed down. Real experience of what it takes to live well with ADHD — combined with professional training in Positive Psychology, counselling, and nervous system regulation.
Professional training alongside lived experience.
PGCert in Applied Positive Psychology and Coaching
Postgraduate training in strengths-based interventions, coaching psychology, and wellbeing science.
MSc Applied Positive Psychology (in progress)
Continuing to deepen my understanding of what the research says about neurodivergent wellbeing and strengths-based practice.
BSc Counselling
Undergraduate training in person-centred and integrative counselling approaches.
BACP Registered Member
Registered with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy. Bound by their ethical framework and committed to ongoing professional development.
VIA Character Strengths Practitioner
Trained in using the VIA assessment — a core tool in Positive Psychology that identifies what's strong about a person rather than what's wrong.
Lived ADHD Experience
Diagnosed as an adult. Everything I offer is informed by what it's like to navigate the world with a brain that works differently.
Making Room for Wellbeing
Our coaching is built on a four-domain model of wellbeing — mental, emotional, physical, and social — informed by PERMAH, one of the most widely researched frameworks in Positive Psychology.
PERMAH stands for Positive Emotions, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, Accomplishment, and Health. Rather than treating these as a checklist, we use them as a lens — a way of understanding where you're struggling, where you're strong, and where small shifts can have the biggest effect.
The four domains are interconnected. What disrupts one disrupts all of them. What strengthens one strengthens the rest. That's why we don't just work on 'mindset' or 'habits' in isolation — we look at the whole picture.
Mental
How you understand yourself, your patterns, and your ADHD. Linked to Engagement and Accomplishment — finding flow, setting goals that make sense for your brain, and recognising what you're capable of when the conditions are right.
Emotional
How you process your day, manage intensity, and recover. Linked to Positive Emotions — not toxic positivity, but building your capacity to experience and hold onto the good alongside the hard. Regulation, resilience, and self-compassion.
Physical
Your energy, your nervous system, and your environments. Linked to Health — nervous system attunement, sensory load, energy pacing, and making your physical spaces work for you instead of against you.
Social
Your relationships, communication, and sense of belonging. Linked to Relationships — building connections that feel safe, learning to unmask, setting boundaries, and finding people who get it.
And running through all of it: Meaning.
Meaning is the thread that connects the four domains. It's the part of PERMAH that answers 'what for?'. Helping you move from surviving your ADHD to building a life that reflects your values, your interests, and your own definition of what a good life looks like. It's what drives the shift from stuck to moving forward.
Three phases. Your pace.
See what's happening
We help you name the patterns, the costs, and the strengths you've been using to cope. Using the VIA Character Strengths assessment, we identify what's working alongside what needs attention.
Build alternatives
We shift the thought patterns and habits that keep you stuck. Not by forcing them out, but by developing emotional regulation skills and strengths-based strategies that fit your life.
Put it into practice
Routines that hold up. Language to communicate your needs. A daily life that reflects how you want to live, grounded in your own experience.
This isn't just a coaching practice.
MakeRoomFor is a mission to change what neurodivergent support looks like in the UK. Right now, too many ADHD adults are waiting years for help, navigating services that weren't designed for them, or going it alone. We believe they deserve better — and we're building it.
Coaching is where we start. But the long-term vision is bigger: group programmes, practical toolkits, community spaces, and partnerships that bring strengths-based, ADHD-informed support to more people in more places. Nationwide and growing.
The name is the mission. MakeRoomFor. Room for the experiences that don't get talked about. Room for strengths that have gone unrecognised. Room for neurodivergent adults to live well — on their own terms.
What we stand for.
Honesty
No jargon, no empty promises. We tell you what coaching can do and what it can't. If we're not the right fit, we'll say so.
Respect
You know your life better than we do. Coaching isn't advice — it's a space where your experience is taken seriously and your autonomy is protected.
Accessibility
ADHD support shouldn't only be available to people who can afford private healthcare. Sliding scale pricing. Online delivery. No waitlists.
Evidence
Everything we do is grounded in Positive Psychology research. Not trends, not hunches, not what worked for one person on social media.
A few things this isn't.
This isn't therapy.
Joe is a qualified Counsellor, but MakeRoomFor delivers coaching — forward-looking, strengths-based, and structured around your goals. If you need clinical support for trauma, crisis, or serious mental health conditions, we'll help you find the right person.
This isn't a quick fix.
We don't sell transformation in six sessions. Real change with ADHD takes time, repetition, and patience. We'll be honest about that from the start.
This isn't one-size-fits-all.
There's no set programme, no workbook to complete, no modules to tick off. Coaching adapts to you — your patterns, your pace, your priorities.

FAQ's
Not sure what to expect? These answers might help you feel more confident as you begin.
nded in Positive Psychology, not clinical therapy. We focus on building emotional regulation skills, identifying strengths, and creating practical strategies for daily life. Joe is a BACP-registered Counsellor, but this service is delivered as coaching — forward-looking, strengths-based, and structured around your goals.
Do I need a formal ADHD diagnosis? No. Many people come to us while waiting for assessment, after self-identifying, or with a recent diagnosis they're still making sense of. What matters is that you recognise the patterns and want support with them.
How do sessions work? Sessions are online, one-to-one, and run for 50 minutes. We meet weekly or fortnightly depending on what works for you. There's no fixed programme — we work with what you bring and build from there.
How much does it cost? £70 per session. A sliding scale is available for those who need it — just ask. No judgement.
What if I need to cancel or reschedule? Life with ADHD is unpredictable. We ask for 24 hours notice where possible, but we understand that things come up. Get in touch and we'll sort it out.
Is this only for people with ADHD? Our coaching is designed around the ADHD experience, but we also work with people who identify as neurodivergent more broadly — including those with autism, or who are exploring what neurodivergence means for them.
How long do people usually work with you? It varies. Some people come for 6-8 sessions around a specific challenge. Others stay longer as things shift and new priorities emerge. There's no minimum commitment and no lock-in.
I've tried therapy before and it didn't help. How is this different? A lot of traditional therapy wasn't designed with ADHD brains in mind. We use Positive Psychology — which means we start with what's strong about you, not what's wrong. Sessions are practical, direct, and built around how your brain works, not a neurotypical model of how it should.
What happens in the first session? We talk. You tell us what's going on, what's been hard, and what you want to be different. We start to map your patterns and strengths, and we'll usually introduce the VIA Character Strengths assessment. No forms to fill in beforehand. Just show up.
Can I get in touch before committing? Yes. Send a message through the site and we'll have an informal conversation first. No obligation.
Didn’t find your answer? Send us a message — we’ll respond with care and clarity.

That’s okay. You don’t need to have it all figured out. Sometimes just showing up is the most important first step — and your therapist will guide you from there.
Progress doesn’t always feel like progress. Sometimes it’s showing up. Sometimes it’s pausing. But each moment of awareness becomes part of the path forward — and you don’t have to walk it alone.
